Who can apply to RTHS?
To apply to Research Triangle High School your student must currently be in 8th grade and reside in North Carolina. RTHS will have extensive programming in place to support students who have the ability to complete Algebra I in the 9th grade but who have not been well prepared to do so, as well as an accelerated curriculum for those students who are prepared for more advanced studies. A July “Meet RTHS NEST Camp” is strongly recommended for all students prior to fall enrollment, both as an introduction to our community and as a chance for students to experience our blend of digital materials and hands-on experiences.
At RTHS, any child who is qualified under the laws of the state for admission to a public school is qualified for admission to a charter school. In order to apply to a charter school, a parent or guardian must be physically living - "domiciled" - in the state of North Carolina at the time of application. Non-domiciled families must wait until having moved to NC to apply to the school. Notwithstanding any law to the contrary, RTHS may refuse admission to any student who has been expelled or suspended from a public school under G. S. 115C-391 until the period of suspension or expulsion has expired.
A detailed explanation of RTHS admissions and enrollment policies is available.
RTHS Board Policies – Updated February 2017
Lottery Preferences (all refer to G.S. 115C-218.45(f)):
RTHS will grant lottery preference to students who meet any of the following conditions.
Siblings of currently enrolled students who were admitted to the charter school in a previous year. For the purposes of this subsection, the term "siblings" includes any of the following who reside in the same household: half siblings, stepsiblings, and children residing in a family foster home.
Siblings of students who have completed the highest grade level offered by that school and who were enrolled in at least four grade levels offered by the charter school or, if less than four grades are offered, in the maximum number of grades offered by the charter school.
Limited to no more than fifteen percent (15%) of the school's total enrollment, unless granted a waiver by the State Board of Education, the following:
Children of the school's full-time employees. In the event that an employee is hired after the lottery for that year has been drawn, the student may still be enrolled. Children of employees may be eligible for enrollment if they are rising eleventh or rising twelfth graders.
Children of the charter school's Board of Directors.
A student who was enrolled in the charter school within the two previous school years but left the school (i) to participate in an academic study abroad program or a competitive admission residential program or (ii) because of the vocational opportunities of the student's parent.
RTHS will allow students who attend Global Scholars Academy or Maureen Joy Charter School to be granted enrollment priority under NC G.S. 115C-218.45(f)(b).
The RTHS Board of DIrectors further defines a rising student as someone who officially completed the previous academic year of study. For example, a rising ninth grader is a student who is currently enrolled in, and expected to complete, the eighth grade in the school year immediately prior to application to RTHS.
* If the enrollment period has passed and you are newly interested in RTHS, you may complete an online application or download the application, print all pages, fill it out completely and mail the completed application packet to: RTHS, P.O. Box 13453, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709. We will add your student to the waitlist. Please do not send certified mail to RTHS. We have no easy way to receive it at our P.O. Box.
