The three digital curriculum assets below were developed at RTHS as hands-on, rigorous lessons that bring the application of science, math, and English to our students and allow others outside of Research Triangle Park to have access to the same level of learning and experiences, virtually.
Counter Culture Coffee - Applied Math
RTHS visited our neighbor, Counter Culture Coffee (CCC), to allow our students to experience applying their Math I and Math II skills to the real-world problem of planning coffee roasting for a day’s production and shipping. Students mapped out the problem for themselves, pulled data from CCC, and then presented their recommendations to CCC staff at the end of their two and a half hour exploration.
Syngenta - Biotechnology
RTHS teaches Biotechnology over the course of the Biology year through labs and activities from the applied science of our RTP neighbor, Syngenta. Students learn of the protein engineering and DNA transformation involved in the development of Bt corn.
This curriculum is open and available for anyone to use. Please feel free to pick and choose whatever might be useful to your learning from the videos, assignments, labs and tests.
Oedipus Rex - English I
Students learned about Greek culture and fundamentals of dramatic structure in an active exploration of the text of Oedipus Rex. To this end, students were invited to propose an adaptation of Oedipus Rex as a musical. This required not only a thorough knowledge of the plot, characters and language of the original text, but also the ability to identify cultural elements of the ancient Greeks and find their modern day analogues (for elements such as movie posters, costume designs, etc.), as well as an understanding of the structure of the play in order to choose and create musical moments.
