At RTHS, we have a policy of "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) — that is, we expect students to bring a device with them every day that is capable of interacting with the systems used in classes for class work and homework. This device is typically a laptop or tablet that is large enough to allow students to compose documents, watch videos, and interact dynamically with our learning management systems.

We also award laptops to students who qualify as in need of a school contribution. We do also have a limited number of laptops that are available for students to borrow (for example, if a student's device is left at home or is away for repairs) on a daily basis. These "loaner laptops" are not allowed to go home with students.

We are sensitive to the needs of our students and their families, and we know that these devices can be expensive. However, we also see that the personal ownership of a device like this is key to establishing a relationship between students and their devices, and that this relationship delivers increased engagement in class work and homework while providing students with skills that are critical to future success in college and the workplace.

Through our partnership with RTP-based nonprofit, Kramden Institute, we are able to nominate students to receive a free computer if their family does not already have a working computer in their home.

We have also arranged special pricing through one of our key partners, Lenovo. If you are interested in purchasing a laptop or desktop computer through this program, visit Lenovo at www.lenovo.com/rths or through their outlet store at outlet.lenovo.com . If you have questions about the BYOD policy we have, please contact the Director of Information Technology by email.

For information on RTHS’ Acceptable Computer Use Policy, please see the Student Handbook.
